Ask your MP to call for strong commitments on tree planting
An Early Day Motion (a proposal that a topic be debated in the House of Commons) has been proposed calling on the government to swiftly make strong policy and funding commitments for tree planting.
The EDM number 31, which has garnered signatures from MPs from all the major political parties, calls on government to ‘rapidly…develop and deploy policy levers and funding mechanisms to deliver a major increase in tree planting’ to ‘at least match’ the targets proposed by the Committee on Climate Change report which outlined that tree planting will play a vital role in reducing UK carbon emissions and tackling global climate change.
We’re calling on Tree Wardens across the UK to write to their MPs today and ask them to sign the Early Day Motion.
We need more trees
Trees can play a vital role in tackling climate change, amongst other measures to radically reduce carbon emissions. But if we’re going to get more trees planted, we have a big task ahead of us. UK tree cover is currently at only 13% and we need to increase this to 19% by 2050 to meet the targets proposed by the Committee on Climate Change.
The Tree Council and others in the tree sector are ready to work to dramatically increase tree planting, always ensuring that trees are sourced biosecurely, that the right tree is planted in the right place and cared for in the right way. That’s why we brought partners from the public, private and voluntary sectors together in July to discuss practical ways to meet the proposed new targets.
But we can’t do it alone. If we’re going to plant millions more trees, we need the government to show strong policy and funding commitments.
The Committee on Climate Change is an advisory body to the government. Their own advisors are calling on the government to make firm commitments on tree planting and protection.
The more MPs sign EDM 31, the far likelier it becomes that it will trigger a debate in parliament.
We can’t leave the future of our treescape to chance. Write or email your MP today.

Dear [insert name] MP,
I am writing as your constituent to ask you to sign Early Day Motion 31, calling for swift action on tree planting.
The UK has only 13% tree canopy cover, far below the European average of 35%.
Trees improve our communities and support our wellbeing. They also play a key role in absorbing carbon and tackling damaging climate change.
By supporting EDM 31, you show government that there is strong support for ambitious tree planting targets.
The Motion has 36 signatures and counting. Please increase that total by signing today.
