A new book by Archie Miles, "ASH", celebrates Ash trees in their eleventh hour.
Many of you will know Archie Miles, either from his appearances at Tree Warden Forums or from the several books that he helped to complete with The Tree Council. Well, he’s been at it again!
His new book, “ASH” celebrates Ash at the eleventh hour!
Within the next twenty years there is every chance that we will lose Ash trees from the British landscape as ash dieback sweeps the land. Ash dominant landscapes will change out of all recognition and Ash-reliant ecologies will be thrown into disarray, not to mention the logistical and financial challenges that will haunt many authorities across the country.
Archie can just about recall what the British landscape looked like with the presence of large elm trees prior to the onslaught of Dutch elm disease in the 1970s, but as he leafed through books and trawled the internet seeking beautiful images of elms, he was hard pressed to find anything much. This void in the records of elmscapes inspired Archie to produce a monograph about Ash trees in Britain before it was too late.
The main thrust behind the concept of “ASH” was to create a complete overview of the ash tree’s significance: botanically, ecologically, culturally, economically and above all aesthetically, showing what a beautiful contribution the ash makes in all its manifestations to so many different landscapes.
Jointly sponsored by Woodland Trust and The Ash Project (a special project instigated by Kent Downs AONB) he has worked on “Ash” for the last 18 months and is now proud to announce its publication on 19th September 2018. The book is a large hardback edition (300 x 250mm) with 216 profusely illustrated pages printed on a sumptuous 170gsm FSC accredited paper. Acknowledged tree-lover Dame Judi Dench has also kindly written a foreword for the book. To see more go to Books or Blog on www.archiemiles.co.uk or request the Sampler pdf by email.
