It's vital to think carefully about where to plant your tree. Hover over the picture below to find 4 key questions to help you find the right place.

• Where will be good for nature?You need to make sure that your tree won't damage areas which are already good for nature. So, don't plant it where it will create too much shade for ponds or wildflower meadows. Boggy areas can be a good habitat, so don't plant thirsty trees where they might dry out. Trees planted close together to make a mini-woodland can be good for wildlife.
• Where will be good for the tree?What will the tree need - water (but maybe not too much), sunlight and room to grow. Your tree won't like being planted too close to buildings or other bigger trees which will compete with it. Some trees, like poplars, want more water whilst others like conifers prefer their home to be a bit dry.
• Where will be good for people? Where do you want to have shade and where don't you? Shade is good for people to sit under but bad for your vegetable garden! Do you want it to shade a hot classroom, or will it block out too much daylight? Do you want to be able to see your tree from the building? Would you like it to block an ugly view?
• Where will be good for safety?Don't plant trees under overhead services like electricity cables, and make sure there are not any underground services where you want to plant. Don't plant too close to buildings or paths which might be damaged by growing roots and branches. Check that falling leaves or fruit won't make paths slippery either! Take care that trees planted near a road won't grow so big that they block signposts.
