How to plant a tree

1. Get ready! Trees are best planted between late Autumn and early Spring. National Tree Week is an ideal time. If you can't plant bare root trees as soon as they are delivered, make sure you keep their roots wet and keep them out of the wind.

2. Dig the hole! Large enough for the roots to spread out and deep enough so that the roots will be just below the surface. Break up the soil to help the roots make a good start in their new home. If your tree is taller than 1.5 metres, drive a stake into the bottom of the hole to help support the tree.

3. Plant the tree! If your tree arrived in a pot, take it out and gently spread the roots. Put the tree into the hole and check that the top of the roots will be just below the surface. Fill the hole back up. Once the roots are covered, tread the soil down firmly.

4. Provide protection! Water the tree well and clear away grass and weeds around the trunk. If you have a stake, tie the tree to it. If there are rabbits, hares or deer in your grounds, you will also need to use a tree guard to stop them from eating your tasty tree!
