Spotlight on Favourite Trees

Erewash, Havant and Reading Tree Warden networks are all involved with initiatives designed to record and raise the profile of the links between trees and local heritage.

Havant Tree Wardens in Hampshire launched their Favourite Trees of the Borough competition in August, with the aim of including the winners in a calendar for 2013.

The closing date for entries was 1 November and judging takes place in early December.

Hayling Island Tree Warden, George Fulcher, is pictured above with the ancient yew that he has nominated. It is, he says, “at least 2,000 years old, is one of the 10 largest in the country and stands outside the south door of St Mary's church on Hayling Island.”

Jamie Gargett, Havant Borough Council’s arboriculturalist, said: “The treescape is there to be seen by everyone and it is hoped that the competition will highlight its importance within the borough as a valuable resource for all.”
