Support needed for landmark tree

The Rochester Catalpa, believed to be the oldest in England, needs help to survive.

This American Indian bean tree (Catalpa bignonioides), which graces the entrance to Rochester Cathedral in Kent, is estimated to be between 140 and 150 years old.

It has long since outgrown its protective railings and The Rochester Catalpa Tree Appeal has been set up to raise funds to extend them and to provide suitable new props for the tree.

The organisers say that any help from Tree Wardens with this campaign would be greatly appreciated.

Keep a look out for ancient limes

The group is producing best practice guidance on promoting and enhancing this rare native species in ancient woodland. It is also looking at planting and as management techniques, experimental coppicing, layering and protecting old lime stools.

Other groups dedicated to particular species include the Black Poplar Conservation Group and the Ancient Yew Group (www.ancient-yew.org).
