North Somerset Tree Warden News

New network quickly proves its worth

North Somerset Tree Wardens are proving their worth, following the network’s official launch in September.

“The new Tree Wardens have already started to settle into their roles and to help us tree officers look after trees in the district,” said North Somerset Council's senior tree officer, Ian Monger.

“For example, a Tree Warden reported builders piling up debris around a protected tree. It could have taken me weeks to pick up this problem, but the Tree Warden noticed it immediately, so I could act without delay.

“Our Tree Wardens have already started identifying new places to plant trees, mapping important trees in their areas and commenting on treework applications.

“It’s amazing to see the enthusiasm and ideas come out. One Tree Warden has successfully secured funding from a local company for roadside tree planting.”

The network is now 39 Tree Wardens strong, representing 25 town and parish councils and their communities.

“The small effort to stay in touch with our new Tree Wardens is already being well rewarded in terms of eye and ears, and it’s great to see the network gathering its own momentum,” said Ian.

The plan is for three training events each year to help Tree Wardens expand their knowledge of trees and skills in working with their local communities.
