Seize Big Tree Plant Opportunities

Tree Warden Co-ordinators have been given help to get the most out of the Big Tree Plant.

The campaign was the focus of the  Tree Warden Co-ordinators’ Conference, which The Tree Council organised in June. The line-up included speakers from Defra, the Forestry Commission and grant administrators Groundwork London, all explaining how to get the most out of the campaign and its grant scheme.

Co-ordinators of networks run by Tree Council members have also been sent packs containing Big Tree Plant grant application forms and guidance for them to distribute to their Tree Wardens. (NB. In response to feedback during the first round of grant applications, the Forestry Commission has now modified the application form and guidelines – see http://thebigtreeplant.direct.gov.uk/funding.html)

Tree Council director-general Pauline Buchanan Black explains: “The pack has been put together, with input from us at The Tree Council, by the people at Barcham Trees. As an associate member of The Tree Council, they  also believe in planting trees for the future and want to help us to encourage widespread participation in The Big Tree Plant campaign.

“In my role as chair of the Big Tree Plant Partnership Board between Defra and all the non-government organisations, I have been working to find ways of more widely promoting awareness of both the benefit of trees in urban environments and the new urban tree planting grant fund, run by Groundwork London on behalf of the Forestry Commission."
