Plymouth Gets Planting

Urban Communites Get Planting

The Forestry Commission has funded The Tree Council to deliver 4 projects in 4 cities to get the ball rolling for The Big Tree Plant. These projects will be about getting communities engaged in tree planting as well as caring for their local trees.

The Tree Council worked with Plymouth Tree Partnership, the voluntary group in Plymouth who co-ordinate the Tree Wardens, to identify tree planting projects that would have the biggest impact and engage the most people across the city.

The 5 chosen projects all involved planting trees in public spaces - in a local shopping centre car park, on a residential street, on local green spaces and at local primary school.

Volunteer Tree Wardens worked closely with the city council to make sure they had all the required permissions and had undertaken all the necessary checks needed  to plant street trees.

They also worked with local residents who helped with the planting and undertook to keep an eye out for 'their' tree.

Residents were also asked to suggest planting sites and those that expressed an interest will be invited to future community tree planting events.

Volunteers involved in the project are:

  • Tree Wardens
  • local Rainbows and Brownies
  • local school children
  • the local community.
