Tree Wardens receive awards from London Mayor

St Valentine’s Day proved a fitting date for Tree Wardens and other Londoners Love Trees volunteers to join the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, at a special celebration.

They helped him plant a landmark street tree and heard him call for more tree-loving volunteers to sign up to his Team London army.

The tree – the 10,000th to be funded under the Mayor’s Street Trees scheme – was planted in Bell Avenue, Hillingdon. The St Valentine’s Day planting means the scheme has now achieved its target.

The Mayor also presented Team London Stars awards to Tree Wardens Jane Plant of Merton, Tim Kavanagh of Hackney and Cat Armstrong of Wandsworth to mark their efforts to plant and protect trees as a key part of the Londoners Love Trees initiative.

Through this initiative, which is a strand of the Mayor’s Team London programme, volunteers are engaged in a range of activities on behalf of the capital’s trees, from mass tree planting to acting as Tree Wardens.

One of the very important roles for London Tree Wardens is looking after newly-planted trees, such as the thousands planted through the Street Tree scheme, to help them thrive in what can be a challenging urban environment.
