Trees for Cities is an independent charity working to improve the environment in urban areas by involving local people in community tree planting, training and landscaping projects.
Set up as Trees for London in 1993, Trees for Cities' aim is to tackle global warming, create social cohesion and beautify our cities through tree planting, community, education and training initiatives in urban areas of greatest need.
Trees for Cities manages projects across London, in Bristol, Leeds, Manchester and Reading as well as internationally in Addis Ababa, Bucharest, Nairobi and Ica, Peru. All its community greening projects are supported by extensive community consultation and involvement programmes that incorporate local residents, schools and community groups.
As well as educating local people about its projects, in London they also run a series of horticulture, arboriculture and woodland management courses specialising in developing and up-skilling the long-term unemployed.
