The Sylva Foundation is a tree and forestry charity (No. 1128516) that aims to revive Britain's wood culture. Founded in March 2009, SYLVA has rapidly established a reputation for innovation and developed a portfolio of strategically important initiatives. It has three core programmes covering science, education and forestry.
SCIENCE
SYLVA runs the independent think-tank Forestry Horizons, conducting peer-reviewed science and strategic reviews. More than 25 publications are available on the Forestry Horizons website. A SYLVA Scholarship will be launched with the University of Oxford in 2010. Also in 2010, an exciting new 'citizen science' project will be piloted with the Tree Council and other partners.
EDUCATION
The OneOak project is following the full life story of one oak tree, with the aim of bringing people closer to growing trees for wood. 250 school children are involved in the project, plus scientists, artists and dozens of wood users. The OneOak tree is now the most studied tree in Britain. SYLVA also supports Forest School.
FORESTRY
myForest was launched in 2010 as a web-based national service that aims to support the mapping and sustainable management of woodlands, and to provide a wood marketing platform.
