Landlife is a charity taking action for a better environment through creative conservation - making new places for wildlife and encouraging people to enjoy them.
It pioneered topsoil inversion, an elegant intervention cited in the UK response to the Global Plant Strategy. This innovative forestry and meadow creation technique turns a meter of soil upside down using special ploughs built for Landlife, resulting in:
*
Moisture and nutrients held at depth, promoting faster growing, deeper rooting trees better able to survive droughts resulting from climate change
*
Buried weeds, precluding the need for annual herbiciding of new plantations
*
Ideal conditions for creating attractive sustainable habitats for people to enjoy
Landlife has worked extensively across the UK with woodland partners creating biodiverse rich new sustainable habitats using this technique.
It created the National Wildflower Centre, which opened to the public in 2000 and trades in wildflower seeds and plants.
