The Institute of Chartered Foresters (ICF) was founded in 1925 as the Society of Foresters of Great Britain. It became the Institute of Foresters in 1974 and was incorporated by Royal Charter in 1982. The Institute's main objectives are the maintenance and improvement of the standards of practice and understanding of all aspects of forestry in its widest sense, the protection of the public interest and the promotion of the professional status of foresters and arborists in Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The Institute is the only professional body for forestry, arboriculture and related disciplines in the UK, and Chartered Foresters (MICFor or FICFor) are the only qualified professional foresters and arboriculturists. Members practice in every related discipline across the private sector, central and local government, research councils, universities and colleges, amongst others.

Becoming a Chartered Forester requires a minimum of 5 years of study and experience (although there is an accredited professional route for senior foresters and arboriculturists). Chartered Foresters must pass rigorous examinations and after qualification must maintain high standards through continuous professional development. Chartered Foresters are bound by a Code of Ethics and rules of Professional Conduct.
