Durham Wildlife Trust is a registered charity. It was established in 1971 to conserve wildlife and natural features and to promote nature conservation in County Durham, the City of Sunderland, and Boroughs of Gateshead, South Tyneside, Darlington and in adjacent coastal waters. The Trust manages 26 nature reserves with the help of 150 wonderful volunteers. These reserves cover 600 hectares of some of the most important wildlife sites in the region. It also delivers a number of projects targeted at helping species or habitat under threat and inspiring people to get involved with nature conservation.
The Trust is passionate about education and provides an environmental education programme to thousands of primary schoolchildren each year. It strives to involve as many people as it can in nature conservation from young people and community groups to companies and public bodies, believing that people who are inspired about the natural environment will take more responsibility for it in their everyday lives.
Thousands of people in the Durham Region are members of Durham Wildlife Trust and membership is growing as people become more aware of the importance of the environment to their lives and the lives of their children.
