Organiser: Snowdonia Society
County: Conwy
Town: Llanberis
Location: Both meetings at Pardarn Country Park, Llanberis
Event details: Meeting at 10am in Padam Country Park pay and display car park. £2 per day claimed back from society, ask for an expenses form. We will be collecting acorns in the woodlands behind Ysbyty Chwarel hospital and visitors centre, this is accessed by the car park via a flight of slate steps beyond and to the left of the toilets. We will be collecting acorns from native Sessile Oaks (Quercus petraea), and have kindly been given permission by the Pardarn Country Park to collect acorns in these ancient woodlands. Both woodland have been authorised as designated stands, and as such we will be able to pass the collected acorns on, to help encourage and sustain the continued planting of native oaks in and around the Snowdonia National Park. Sessile Oak stands are less common than Pedunculate Oaks (Quercus robur) locally, and as such acorns are always in short supply.
Bring a packed lunch, tea/coffee, working clothes, waterproofs. You may like to bring rakes to avoid bending excessively and to aid collection. I usually find it easier to sit and collect acorns within reach before moving along. Gloves and collection bags will be provided.
