Organiser: South Lakeland Friends of the Earth
County: Cumbria
Town: Kendal
Location: "The Bird Cage" Top of Finkle Street, Kendal
Details: Return of the Native Beech leaf shaped postcards will be decorated and signed asking for the reclassification of beech in Cumbria from "non-native" to "new- native". The postcards will be sent to decision makers such as Defra and Natural England. Beech is still classified as 'non-native' in Cumbria despite written reports that there needs to be a change in policy to make sure we have mature beech woods in England in the future. There is a growing consensus at a national level that conservation policies and practice must shift to take account of climate change. As long ago as 2002 English Nature (now Natural England) stated "beech woodland in the north and west should be maintained (and not cut back) as potential future natural stands under the future changed climate. The issue of beech woodland conservation beyond its current native range provides a good example of what may be involved. In some cases reversal of past recommendations will be needed" (The implications of climate change for the conservation of beech woodlands and associated flora in the UK- Research Report 528 author Sonia Wesche 2002). A 100 year old beech is worth more than 200 saplings...but the old timers are being felled ....and grants are given to do this. .... "felling the non-natives" sounds great! but where does that leave the English Beech?

Organiser: Council for Church and Society
County: Devon
Town: Exeter
Location: Exeter Cathedral
Details: Famous writer Colin Tudge will be opening a series of public lectures on Trees at Exeter Cathedral on 27th November, to coincide with National Tree Week. The author of 'The Secret Life of Trees' will be talking about the practical significance of trees for us all, as well as their own intrinsic value as an integral part of life on Earth. This will be followed by lectures on the same theme by biblical scholar Francesca Stavrakopoulou on 27th November, and artist Ruth Harvey-Regan on 11th December. They will all start in the Chapter House promptly at 7.00p.m. and entrance to them is free.
The lectures are part of a larger project called 'Roots of Inspiration', which explores the Tree as an expression of God and source of art. Director Martyn Goss says, "Trees are so important for both human life and the Earth's ecology. If there had been no trees our society and culture would not exist, yet we take them for granted for most of the time. Trees provide timber for our hands, fuels for our industry, foods for our tables, shade for our bodies and a sense of beauty for our minds. Yet they are not well appreciated and often recklessly damaged by our lifestyles". He added, "Roots of Inspiration aims to re-connect us with woods, forests and trees through poetry, photography and technology. It is a re-awakening of their significance as a deep source of inspiration for faith and art". Trees in Devon which inspire us to write poems are also featured in an innovative activity launched by the Council for Church and Society. "Trees and the Spirit" is the title of a poetry competition open to anyone, encouraging entries from across the county. The judge will be James Harpur, former poet-in-residence at Exeter Cathedral, and cash prizes of up to £250 will be awarded to the three best entrants. Entry fee is £6 per poem. The closing date is 26th October and entry forms are available from the Old Deanery, Exeter (01392-294940). These may also be accessed on-line from www.exeter.anglican.org/ccs
