Organiser: Stop Stansted Expansion
County: Essex
Town: Broxted, nr Great Dunmow
Location: Stop Stansted Expansion Wood, Broxted Hill Farm, Broxted CM6 2EP
Event details: Stop Stansted Expansion (SSE) Patron Terry Waite CBE will be visiting the SSE Wood on Broxted Hill on Sunday 29 November to plant an oak tree in honour of SSE's first Chairman, the late Norman Mead MBE, who fought against the unsustainable expansion of Stansted Airport over three decades. First mooted in 2002, the plans for a new runway have severely blighted those living in the shadow of the airport and beyond with proposals for an enormous land, homes and heritage grab to create an airport handling more aircraft and passengers than Heat hrow today. The SSE Wood was created in late 2004 to reflect the determination and resolve of SSE supporters who planted it as a symbol of hope that this community's children - like the trees within the wood - will flourish and reach maturity in this community rather than be uprooted from their homes to make way for an expanded Stansted Airport. The inaugural tree planting was carried out by Terry Waite earlier that summer. Tree species which have been planted in the wood thanks to the sponsorship of hundreds of SSE members include Field Maple, Pedunculate Oak, Hornbeam, Hazel, Hawthorn, Blackthorn, Ash and Crab Apple.
